Transparent methodology

How the numbers are calculated.

No black box. These are the rules the Plan Builder applies, so you can judge the results for yourself.

What it doesn’t do

  • Recommend specific stocks, funds or accounts
  • Calculate taxes or file anything
  • Check or change your credit
  • Connect to or move money in your accounts
Cash flow
Monthly take-home income minus expenses and minimum debt payments.
Cash runway
Cash accounts divided by monthly expenses plus minimum debt payments. The illustration uses a 3-month target that you can change.
Debt timeline
Modeled with minimums on every balance, extra toward the highest interest rate first, and each paid-off minimum rolled into the next debt. That is one common method, not the only one. Interest compounds monthly at the rates you enter.
Surplus splits
The Plan Builder doesn’t pick a split. It shows four preset splits side by side, and you can set your own with the sliders to see how each changes your runway, payoff date and goals. Contributions you already make are subtracted first. Debts at 18% APR or higher are flagged; you can change that threshold.
Goals
The monthly amount each dated goal needs, with available surplus shared across goals in proportion to need.
No score
The Plan Builder does not grade your finances or rank your priorities. It shows what your numbers say and leaves the decisions to you.

Questions

Plan Builder FAQ.

How long does it take?

Most of the time goes into gathering your numbers, so have recent bank and loan statements handy. Progress saves as you go, so you don’t have to finish in one sitting.

Do I need to connect my bank accounts?

No. You type in your own numbers. Nothing connects to your bank, card or investment accounts.

Who can see my numbers?

Your plan is saved to your account. Adulting Finances only receives a copy of your report if you choose to send it. The privacy policy explains the services involved.

Can I buy the Plan Builder on its own?

No. The Plan Builder is included in The Adulting Finances Program, where lessons show you how to use each result.

Can I update my plan later?

Yes. Change any number, recalculate and download a new PDF whenever your situation changes.

Is this financial advice?

No. The Plan Builder is an educational tool. It applies transparent rules of thumb to the numbers you enter. It doesn’t recommend specific investments and isn’t individualized investment, tax or legal advice.
