Questions this topic answers

  • What should I prioritize first?
  • How do I balance debt payoff, saving and investing?
  • How often should I review my finances?
  • What should make me change my plan?
  • What is a financial independence number?

Key ideas

The financial planning essentials.

The concepts that come up again and again, in plain English.

Order of operations
A sequence for where money goes: cover essentials, protect against emergencies and high-interest debt, capture employer matches, then build long-term investments. The right order depends on your situation.
Goal sequencing
Deciding which goals get funded first when you can’t fund everything at once.
Review cadence
A regular check-in, weekly for spending and monthly for progress, that keeps a plan from drifting.
Plan triggers
Events that should prompt an update: a raise, a job change, a move, a new family member or new debt.
Financial independence number
A rough estimate of the portfolio needed to cover your expenses. It’s often estimated as 25 times annual spending (the “4% rule” of thumb), which rests on assumptions worth understanding.
